Slate Falls Nation was one of six new First Nations established under Six Nishnawbe Aski Bands Agreement between the Governments of Ontario, and the six Northwestern Ontario Bands. The Slate Falls Nation was recognized on April 15, 1985 as the Slate Falls Band #259 under the Indian act {revised 1985}.

People have been living in the area of Slate Falls for two centuries. Members of the Osnaburgh House Indian Band established main camps there for managing surrounding traplines and hunting grounds in the 1700's. Eventually a community developed.
